The Blue Lake Rancheria (BLR) Tribal Police Department (TPD) recently visited McKinleyville High School to spread awareness about how future drivers can interact with law enforcement personnel in a safe manner during their first traffic stops. BLR TPD Officers Kyle Mayr and Raven Moon had an open conversation with McKinleyville High students, answering questions, telling stories, and sharing the perspective of police officers during traffic stops to let the students know about what police officers can encounter, and how the scenario can be approached in a way that makes the process less stressful for all parties. During this visit, students were informed of the law enforcement Blue Envelope Program, using information from the program to give a rough outline of how a typical traffic stop should go.
The Blue Envelope Program supports drivers who may have communication differences or need extra help during traffic stops. Through this program, a blue envelope is provided for storing driver’s license, registration, and insurance, along with a note section for officers to indicate communication needs. This program aims to reduce stress for both drivers and officers, support clear communication, promote safe, respectful interactions, and build community-wide understanding and awareness.
