Blue Lake Rancheria attends Puerto Rico Innovative Distributed Energy Conference

From June 16th to June 20th, 2025, ๐—•๐—น๐˜‚๐—ฒ ๐—Ÿ๐—ฎ๐—ธ๐—ฒ ๐—ฅ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฎ Clean Energy Fellow ๐— ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐˜€๐—ผ๐—ป ๐—›๐˜‚๐—ป๐˜ attended the ๐—ฃ๐˜‚๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜๐—ผ ๐—ฅ๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ผ ๐—œ๐—ป๐—ป๐—ผ๐˜ƒ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ ๐——๐—ถ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฏ๐˜‚๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐—˜๐—ป๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ด๐˜† ๐—–๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ณ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ฒ, hosted by fellows at Cooperativa Hidroelectrica de la Montana.

๐— ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐˜€๐—ผ๐—ป ๐—›๐˜‚๐—ป๐˜ participated in a 4-day immersive summit, visiting communities facing energy insecurity and learning about some renewable energy solutions to Puerto Ricoโ€™s grid challenges. This conference brought together 36 young energy professionals from the Department of Energyโ€™s ๐—˜๐—ป๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ด๐˜† ๐—œ๐—ป๐—ป๐—ผ๐˜ƒ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ผ๐—ฟ ๐—™๐—ฒ๐—น๐—น๐—ผ๐˜„๐˜€๐—ต๐—ถ๐—ฝ to learn about different types of energy generation, including rooftop solar, onshore winds, and hydroelectric systems. The participants were able to learn about the history and current state of Puerto Ricoโ€™s energy crisis through on-site tours from community leaders, utility providers, and system operators.

โ€œPuerto Rico is an island territory of the United States, nearly 4,000 miles away from Humboldt, with its own unique energy challenges and history of colonization. Despite this, many shared experiences and lessons are relevant to rural Tribal communities on the North Coast of California. An aging grid, transmission that traverses densely forested mountain ranges, extreme weather events, landslides, and disproportionate energy burdens placed upon low-income and rural communities are among the top challenges both regions are grappling with today.โ€ -๐— ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐˜€๐—ผ๐—ป ๐—›๐˜‚๐—ป๐˜

๐— ๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ด๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฑ๐˜€ are a leading solution to these complex issues, as they provide increased adaptability and capacity during power outage events. Underserved communities such as ๐—Ÿ๐—ฎ ๐— ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ด๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐˜๐—ฎ, ๐—–๐—ฎ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐—ฟ, and ๐—•๐—น๐˜‚๐—ฒ ๐—Ÿ๐—ฎ๐—ธ๐—ฒ ๐—ฅ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฎ have embraced microgrid technology. The shift towards microgrid technology has helped ๐—•๐—น๐˜‚๐—ฒ ๐—Ÿ๐—ฎ๐—ธ๐—ฒ ๐—ฅ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฎ in building community resilience through innovative, self-sufficient energy solutions.
