Eureka High School Native American Day Celebration

Last week, Eureka City Schools partnered with Blue Lake Rancheria and the Northern California Indian Development Council to present a California Native American Day celebration. This celebration was held in the Jay Willard Gym at Eureka High School, and featured fresh food from Frybread Love, and a performance from the nationally renowned hip-hop artist Supaman. As the event kicked off, parents and students mingled, browsed the different tables around the event, and enjoyed the entertainment.

The Blue Lake Rancheria Tribal Education Agency (BLR TEA) had a table at this event in order to give out winter coats to students. Altogether, the BLR TEA was able to distribute 107 winter coats to students and families at the event. As well as distributing winter coats, the BLR TEA also sold stickers at the table which raised a total of $194 to be donated to the Eureka High School Native American Club scholarship fund. After the event, additional boxes of winter coats were left with the Community in Schools staff. These coats will be distributed to Native Students at the resource fair in December as well as to any students who need them from the wellness center at Eureka High School.

Supaman is an award-winning hip-hop artist who tours schools across the country. After everyone had time to mingle and browse, the emcee Vincent Feliz announced the start of the Supaman performance. To start off the show, the DJ played traditional music for the dancers who took the stage. After the dance performance, the music started up. The crowd was quickly engaged and waving their arms. Parents and students alike enjoyed the music and entertainment throughout the night. The BLR TEA would like to thank the students of the Eureka High School Native American Club who helped with setting up, getting supplies, and unloading the boxes of winter coats.
